How to join the military for one day!!!!

Bzzzzzzzzzzzz !!! A 4 am wake up call and a 5:15am pre-board instructional meeting about our flight on a C-130 Military plane to Fort Brag NC……..and they mention a few times that the( C ) doesn’t mean comfort…heck it also means no seats…just a couple of rows of jump seats ..Which means fancy lawn chair straps…….you want heat sit towards the front of the plane…dress warm and put the ear plugs in…I have to say I like it cool on a plane and this had plenty of leg room.. 3 hours in air, and I saw every mechanical element working ,as everything is exposed and someone is walking around with his headset on informing the flight crew I t’s OK..
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in the military fighting for our great country….well I got the chance to do it…..well sort of! I was invited to go on a good will mission and see 1st hand what we are doing at Fort Brag training camp…and witnessing how they train and prepare themselves for their mission to Afghanistan….

I have always been proud of our armed forces…and after seeing each and every soldier dressed in full gear run from one point to another, that they will soon call routine maneuvers……and host a simulated war with the bad guys..I was even more PROUD and even a higher regard for them..
Here’s a colonel -there’s a colonel, Here’s a General -There’s a General …they were all in motion practicing what they are about to be shipped off to do protect the USA… ME as an observer..I was in the middle of each practice movement, I felt like I was walking across the infield while batting practice was going on and I had no glove to protect myself…and all they had was each other protecting them from danger
Here I was in a mock war zone with excited, tired, hungry, young soldiers,, each one covering each others back..Wanting to be the one to take the lead and be the hero they are being trained for..and after hours of hard work they were invited to have lunch with us…in a lunch package…and I mean package.. I ate one cold tamale and the rest I offered to the young soldiers..They picked up the small extra rations so fast I thought I was being mugged..They are not only are teaching them to survive in the war zone..but also how to live on 1000 calories a day… I think we all need that now and then..What a great diet planI guess my invitation was to see if they are ready..BELIEVE me they are ready to help out, fight, and teach and we should be proud ..very proud.. these troops are heading over after Thanksgiving…and we should all think about the work they are doing so we can have our right to enjoy life.. So when you sit down and have your Thanksgiving dinner…give a toast to our fighting men and woman THEY DESERVE PLENTY
Thank you Chicago White Sox and to the Fort Brag staff for giving myself a chance to see some real hero’s…it was pretty awesome…an experience I will NEVER forget
